Tree ID

Some of the trees we identified yesterday were the Blackjack Oak (above),
Carolina Buckthorn,
Flowering Dogwood,
Sassafras,
and Winged Sumac.
There were many hickories (several varieties--we weren't able to identify which ones), cedars, lots of different kinds of Oaks, some Tulip Poplar, Black Walnut--and that was just part of the yard. Now to learn the rest!

Gone With the Wind!

A thunderstorm blew through this morning dropping about half an inch of rain and minor destruction in its wake. Branches were down all over our road and several homes had portions of trees down also. The sumac trees by our driveway lost a large branch that blocked the drive. We also lost most of our large Weeping Willow in the front yard.

The Weeping Willow had three trunks and the largest one was broken off--if you look carefully, you can see that it even lifted part of the root from the ground.
The tree covers my Calla Lily bed--hopefully they weren't permanently damaged--it is mostly the smaller, upper branches covering them.
The downed portion of the tree just missed the bird feeders and is taking up most of the open space in the front yard.
