Happy Birthday, Mr. M!

Yesterday was Mr. M's 89th birthday. We spent the morning at the doctor's office (I tried to get the appointment for another day, but they didn't have anything available). Then we went to Cracker Barrel for lunch--Mr. M had chicken and dumplings, green beans, fried okra, and apple pie with ice cream. I had a grilled cheese sandwich with lettuce and tomato, steak fries, and apple pie.

After I took him home (with a stop at the pharmacy), I got gas in the truck and went to Scottsville to pick up Pepper's medicine. Then, to the grocery store to get ingredients for banana pudding. I stopped at L's (a mutual friend who does cooking and light housekeeping for Mr. M) to drop off the ingredients so she could make the pudding. I stayed for supper, then stopped by Mr. M's to drop off Pepper's medicine and have a piece of birthday cake with him. I was home by 7:00.

Monday with Mr. M--mostly

Monday, Mr. M had a doctor appointment at 1:15. We left at 11:00 so we could do lunch first at Cracker Barrel. He decided to walk into Cracker Barrel without his walker, but asked me to go get it for the return to the truck.

We got to the doctor's office (a new one we had never been to) a few minutes early and did the required paper work. It was after 2:00 when we were called back to the exam room and nearly 3:00 by the time we left.

We made a stop at Walmart--cat food, etc. Then Mr. M decided he wanted to eat somewhere again before going home. He finally decided on Dairy Queen where he got a burger and shake and I got french fries and a hot fudge sundae.

When we got home, I had to fix some pills for him since his box was empty. I dashed in the door of our house at 5:20--just as M and T were leaving for T's piano lesson. I changed into my Pathfinder uniform and checked e-mail, then went to Pathfinders--got there just a few minutes early.

On the way home from Pathfinders--just about 9:00--the freezing rain that had been predicted began to fall.

Another Day, Another Doctor

I had to take Mr. M to another doctor appointment Wednesday. His appointment was at 2:30, so I suggested we leave about 12:30 and do lunch first (trying to make sure he gets at least one good meal a day). I glanced out the window about 12:00 and saw him parked in my driveway.

We went on to Cracker Barrel--finished lunch a bit before 2:00--decided to go on to the doctor's so we wouldn't have to hurry. We waited in the waiting room for about half an hour, then got called back to the exam room. The doctor showed up about 3:30--we left about 4:00.

Mr. M needed cat food and a few other things at Walmart, so we went there next. He was feeling pretty good and walked through quite a bit of the food side of the store. It was a bit after 5:00 when we got done there. He decided that we should eat again, so we went back to Cracker Barrel.

We got back to his house about 6:30, unloaded and put away the groceries. I was supposed to refill his pill box, but he hadn't taken any medicine for the day, so I moved the morning and noon pills over a day and left him taking his evening pills. It was nearly 7:00 when I got home. I'll have to go back today and do his pill box and return his truck.

My Week--So far

Mr. M had two doctor appointments on Monday. As we were sitting in the waiting room at the first doctor's, he told me his pain patch had come off and his feet were hurting. I called his primary care doctor to get a new prescription as I knew he was nearly out. We had time for lunch between doctor appointments and went to Cracker Barrel. We got home about 3:00--I changed his patch and came home. I got a few things ready for Pathfinders, ate supper and we left at 5:15 for Piano lesson and Pathfinders.

Tuesday, we had library books due in both Portland and Gallatin. We (T and I) went to Gallatin first, did the library and a few errands, ate lunch and went to Portland. We got home a little after 5:00. M told me as I walked in that Mr. M had called to say that he had used up his last two pain patches because they kept falling off. I dashed back to town to the Pharmacy (which closes at 6:00), got the new prescription filled, walked in the door at Mr. M's to find smoke billowing from the stove. He had already burned one attempt at supper and had opened a can of chicken and dumplings to warm up--sat down in his chair and forgot about them. I got the pan off the burner and the burner off--put the new pain patch on him. Then he asked me to go to town and get him something to eat--since he had burned his supper. I called first and placed the order at the local restaurant so they could be fixing it while I drove back to town. I got his supper and took it to him, then came home. T had fixed supper (enchiladas) while I was gone--he and M had already eaten, but they saved me some--which was good because it was almost 7:00.

A Day in the Life...

5:00 a.m.--Got up and fixed lunch for M--he had to work in the office today

6:00 a.m.--Called Mr. M to make sure he was awake so he'd have time to get ready for a doctor's appointment

8:00 a.m.--Called Mr. M's primary care doctor's office to see if they could work him in

8:30 a.m.--Went to Mr. M's to take him to his doctor appointment

9:15 a.m.--Arrived at the Medical Office Building--let Mr. M out by the front door--went and parked in the parking garage

9:30 a.m.--Arrived at the orthopedist's office where they did another x-ray of Mr. M's arm. The orthopedist said again that he didn't see any break. Mr. M told him how his arm hurt still--the doctor manipulated the arm, said that the ligaments on the outside of the arm were ok, but that the inside ligaments were messed up. The decision was made to put the arm in a cast for 4-6 weeks to immobilize the ligaments and give them the opportunity to heal.

10:15 a.m.--Arrived at the primary care doctor's waiting room.

11:30 a.m.--Called back to the primary care doctor's exam room. An adjustment made to Mr. M's medication.

12:00 p.m.--Left the Medical Office building.

12:15 p.m.--Arrived at Cracker Barrel--had a good lunch.

1:15 p.m.--Went to Walmart--Mr. M was tired and stayed in the truck while I went in and did his shopping.

2:30 p.m.--Left for home. Stopped in town at the car repair shop he uses to speak to someone about a noisy tire.

3:30 p.m.--Arrived at Mr. M's. I unloaded and put away his groceries.

3:45 p.m.--I arrive home after stopping for the mail. I check e-mail, do some stuff on the computer, update my bird list, talk to T, take out my algebra homework and start it, etc.

5:00 p.m.--M arrives home from work. We decide on a "every man for himself" supper and eat.

6:00 p.m.--I head back to the homework, only to be side tracked by the computer--a check of e-mail and a "chat" with an old friend. Also, get a phone call from L.

7:30 p.m.--Return to the homework in earnest. Do a take-home quiz and problems from two sections in the chapter.

9:00 p.m.--Finally done with homework--re-pack backpack with books. Go see what's on the news. Tell T good-night.

9:30 p.m.--The weather report is over--head for bed.

Catching Up

Wednesday--May 21:
Mr. M said he was having trouble breathing when I called him in the morning--he didn't want to wait to see if his medicine would help--wanted me to take him to the ER. I went and got him ready--drove the 20+ miles to the hospital--was turning in at the hospital when he said he felt better and didn't need to go to the ER. He said he wanted to get an appointment with his PCP and go home. So, I parked him in the lot across the street and got him a late afternoon appointment with the PCP. (He already had a 3:00 appointment with a specialist). I took him home, then he said he wanted to go to Cracker Barrel for lunch, so back in the truck and drive another 20 + miles to Cracker Barrel. We got done with lunch and went to the Dr. offices to wait for his appointment. At 3:45 when he hadn't gotten called back to see the Dr. yet, he wanted to go. I talked him into going to his PCP's waiting room down the hall, then went and told the receptionist where we were. They finally called him for the specialist--then back to the PCP. It was 5:30 before we got done--then he wanted to go eat supper--at Cracker Barrel. It was about 8:30 by the time I got home after dropping him off, making sure he took his meds, fed the cats, etc.

Thursday--May 22:
I got up early to get things done to get ready for campmeeting--loads of laundry, ironing, food prep, etc. Mr. M's visit to his PCP the day before had netted a visit to wound care today--1:30. Mr. M wanted to leave early enough to eat first--at Cracker Barrel, of course. We got home about 4:30. I had to run to town for a couple things--got home and kept working on getting ready for campmeeting. When I called Mr. M for his bedtime pills, he was confused about what he was taking, so I went down there and told him what each pill was. I decided I'd better keep working when I got back and get as much done as I could before bed--not knowing what the morrow would bring.

Friday--May 23:
I got up early again to get as much done as possible before calling Mr. M at 8:00. He was in bed when I called but said he'd get right up and take his meds. I called back about 9:30 to check on him--find out his vitals, etc. He was still in bed. I told him I'd call back in a while and to get going on the vitals and meds. When I called at 10:30, still in bed. He said he needed help with his vitals and meds--I thought he was teasing and told him to get up and do his morning chores. I called back at 10:45 and he had his vitals and meds done. I called him again at 1:30 to tell hime we were leaving for campmeeting. Called again about 2:15 to see if he'd taken his afternoon meds--he said he had. I called before the evening meeting to tell him I'd be in the meeting at our usual call time, but would call when the meeting was over. After the meeting when I called he said he had his afternoon pills and bedtime pills and didn't know what to do--so I called home and had M go check on him--he went over and had Mr. M take his pills.

More work

Thursday evening I took Mr. M for a sleep study--had to have him there at 8:00 p.m. We left early to eat supper at Cracker Barrel before going over.

Early Friday morning, (I had to pick Mr. M up from the sleep study at 5:30 a.m.) I got up and went to get Mr. M. We had planned to stay in town as he had a 10:30 dentist appointment, but he decided to go home for a couple hours and go back to the dentist. So, we went to the dentist and then Cracker Barrel for lunch.

Today, just phone calls for reminders.

Not all just fun and birds--work too

Sabbath and Sunday, I did the usual phone calls with medication reminders.

Monday, I took Mr. M to Cracker Barrel for lunch, then a Dr. visit, then Walmart. I stopped by the pharmacy, took him home, put away his cold groceries, took his pill box home to fill, returned it, took him to get gas in his truck and eat supper.

Tuesday, I had to go down in the morning and take one of his pills out of the morning ones, then went back at 12:30 for the nurse visit, then went to town. I brought him back some supper and delivered it. When I called at 8:00 p.m., he needed more medicine so I took it to him.

This morning started with a 6 a.m. wake up call--we left about 7:30 to go for lab work and an MRI. We got done with that about 11:15--we were in the truck about to leave the hospital grounds when Mr. M remembered that they had had him remove his watch and empty his pockets before the MRI and that he didn't get his stuff back. I parked in the closest lot and went back to retrieve his things. Then we went to Cracker Barrel for lunch. Stopped at the pharmacy before going home--got home just before 2:00.

Monday

I did some stuff around the house in the morning, then took Mr. M to Cracker Barrel for lunch and then to Walmart. He had wanted to go to Lowe's also, but ran out of energy.

I took Mr. M home and filled up his pill box.

My new (to me) laptop (a birthday gift) arrived in the afternoon, so M spent the evening getting it set up for me. Now I'll be able to keep up with my blog if we go on vacation (like campmeeting--the last week of this month) and will find it useful if I stay in school (which, by the way, I still don't know my grades yet).

Back to Work Again

Yesterday, I visited Mr. M for about an hour--made breakfast for him--pancakes.

Today, I called him about 7:40 to make sure he was awake--we had to leave at 9:30 for a 10:30 doctor appointment. After the Dr. visit, we went to Cracker Barrel for lunch. Then, off to the dentist for a 1:00 appointment. Then to Walmart. Came back home --I changed his patch medication, took out the trash, took his pill box home to refill. Got done about 4:00.

Wednesday Work

I had to take Mr. M to the hospital imaging department today. While he was busy, a hospital volunteer came by with her therapy dog. It is a teacup Yorkshire Terrier--weighs 4 pounds. She is 7 years old--only has three teeth, which is why her tongue is hanging out.

We left for the hospital at 8:30--had to register--and wait. Got done--went to Cracker Barrel for lunch--then to Walmart for milk for Mr. M and a few things I forgot to get for our trip. After that we stopped and had his truck washed and waxed. Stopped at the pharmacy for a prescription that hadn't been ready the other day--got home in time for the 2:00 medicine.

Another Long Day

I called Mr. M at 6:30 this morning so he could be ready to leave at 8:30 for a 9:30 doctor appointment.

We went to the doctor--had a good report.

I looked at Mr. M's eyes while we were waiting for the doctor--they looked worse. We stopped at the registration desk to see if he could be worked in with his primary care doctor. We could--we were. His primary care doctor referred Mr. M to an eye doctor in town--made the appointment for 3:00.

We decided to go to lunch--at Cracker Barrel. Then we went to Walmart to kill some time--and bought some stuff. Then, off to Lowe's garden center to look at plants--Mr. M bought some Pampas Grass. We still had an hour till the appointment, but decided to go ahead and go to the eye doctor's office--maybe they would call us in early if we were there.

We got to the eye doctors' office--filled out new patient paperwork--sat and watched TV for a while--finally got to see the doctor--a little early. She said it looked allergy related--gave him some different eye drops (to be given every 2 hrs. today and tomorrow--then 4x daily for a week--then 2x daily for a week).

The next stop was the pharmacy to fill the eye drop prescription--a stop at the gas station to fill up--then home. Carried in Mr. M's things from Walmart--put away the cold food--put the drops in his eyes. I came home and ate supper--filled his pill box for the next week--called at 6:30 to remind him about the drops and went to his house to deliver the filled pill box and do the eye drops.

I'll be calling him again at 8:00 for regular medicine reminder and again at 8:30 for an eye drop reminder.

Work Update

Friday, Mr. M and I left about noon and went to Cracker Barrel for lunch. Then to Walmart to pick up a few things. Mr. M had a Dr. appointment at 3:00--we left the Dr. office and stopped at the pharmacy then went home. I did the usual medicine reminders and eye drops.

Sabbath, Mr. M did his own eye drops at 8:00 and noon, but asked me to do the 4:00 and 8:00 drops. I did the usual medicine reminders.

Today, I went to Mr. M's to do some cleaning. I swept and mopped the floors, scooped the litterboxes, cleaned out the fridge, took out the trash, did the dishes, wiped counters--also balanced his checkbook. I went home and cooked lunch--fixed Mr. M a plate and took it to him and did his eye drops. I called him at 2:00 and 4:00 with medicine reminders. About 4:30, I went to his house to pick him up for supper. We went to Cracker Barrel --then Walmart. We got home at 8:00--just in time for his last medicine.

Another Day, Another Appointment

I picked up Mr. M at about 9:00 this morning. I usually allow an hour to get to the doctors' offices--it's about 20 miles--allow time to load up, drive there, unload Mr. M and his walker (which usually rides behind my seat in the extended cab of his pickup), park in the parking garage, walk into the building and meet Mr. M, ride the elevator to the third floor, check in.

We went to the lab for some tests--check in was slowed down by his name being misspelled on the form and misfiled--got done just before 10:30.

Went from the lab to the dentist for an 11:00 appointment. Finished at the dentist about 12:00.

From there, we went to Cracker Barrel for lunch. We got home about 1:45.

(Plus, phone calls at 7:00 for wake up; 8:00, 2:00, and 8:00 for medication reminders).

Short Work Day

Mr. M and I left home at 1:00--went to Cracker Barrel for lunch--went to the Dr.--went to the medical supply store for compression hose--stopped on the way home for gas (the price had dropped 6 cents since we went by on the way to town!). We got home about 5:00.
