Sunday, we went to Columbia/Spring Hill, TN in search of a snowy owl. There had been several reports on the TN birdlist (an e-mail list of rare or unusual bird sightings in TN) for the snowy owl the past few days. We found it by looking for the crowd of birders.
The edge of our spotting scope is at the lower edge of the picture--there is a large industrial building to the left of the red barn. Just to the front and left of that building is a depression with a few trees. The owl was sitting on the ground near the right edge of the depression.
Looking below the red guardrail--almost the center of the picture--is a white dot. That is the snowy owl--as close as my camera would zoom.
Since I don't have a two foot long lens to attach to my camera, I tried a bit of digi-scoping by placing my camera lens into the eyepiece of our spotting scope. The results are a larger white blob. Oh, well.
I think I read that the last appearance of the snowy owl in this area was in 1987.
