There was a surprise visitor at the bird feeders yesterday. I looked out and saw all but one bird gone from the feeder area. The white-breasted nuthatch sat frozen in place on the trunk of the pear tree. I assumed that a hawk was nearby and kept watching, hoping to get a look at it. Suddenly, there was a flurry of motion in the pine tree and the sharp-shinned hawk landed underneath with someone in his talons. It sat for a minute, then flew away.
